Great command prompt tricks

Here you will find out:

  • best command prompt commands
  • how DiskInternals Partition Recovery can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

The Windows command line tool at first glance seems like a forgotten and useless solution. However, this is until you try it in action! Using command line techniques, you can perform a wide variety of functions and things, the main thing is to know the correct commands and some tricks when working with this utility.

Examine drive structure

One of the most convenient and popular little commands is the tree command. Using the tree command you can create a directory map on any of the drives on your computer. Then you can export the tree results to a file for later viewing.

Easy access

It is a known fact that constantly running cd / chdir to change to the correct directory can be very tedious.

However, you can open the command line anywhere. So, open the folder you want and while there, hold down the Shift key and right-click anywhere in the folder. The message Open command window here appears, select it and this will start a new instance of the command line.

DO NOT say thank you for this valuable little trick!

Alternatively, you can use another one of the cmd commands tricks which is needed to conveniently enter the path name.

Correct execution of the command requires that you provide full paths to the files, but entering a long path can be frustrating and you can easily make the mistake of missing a character.

Here's what you can do:

Open the folder in explorer and drag it to the command prompt window and release. Voila - the full path will be automatically entered, which allows you to significantly save in time and effort.

Robocopy

The robocopy command saves you the hassle of using Windows backup software or installing any kind of backup management software.

This is what the command looks like: robocopy c:\users\ellen\documents Y:\mybackup\documents/copyall/e/r:0/dcopy:t/mir

Note: Replace the name of the source and destination folders.

The robocopy command is suitable for incremental backups and synchronization of both locations.

If the robocopy command is not available to you (Windows XP or earlier), you can use the xcopy command:

xcopy c:\users\ellen\documents Y:\mybackup\documents/c/d/e/h/i/k/q/r/s/x/y

Create a batch file containing the given command, and then schedule it to run in Task Scheduler. After that, you will have a backup solution.

Local folder options

Using the subst command will map a local folder to a network drive, and the net use command can be used to map shared drives on the network to your own computer. There is another small command for this purpose:

for example, do you want your D: \ Windows \ Fonts folder to appear as drive Q, then, run this command:

substitution q: d: \ windows \ fonts

Protect your data

You need to play it safe before using the command line, as some commands are very tricky and can damage some or even all of your data. So, the most convenient way to recover damaged, deleted, inaccessible files from any disk, including a hard disk, is a special program for data recovery DiskInternals Partition Recovery.

The program is equipped with a reliable and completely understandable recovery wizard, by the way, you can choose one of three helpers. If at the beginning of the data recovery process you close the activated recovery wizard, you can take advantage of the free disk imaging function and use it at the right time.

You can download and try this utility for free - it will be a thoughtful and balanced decision, so you will learn about all the benefits, additional free features and basic nuances of working with DiskInternals Partition Recovery.

Here's how to do it:

Once you have this program on your computer, open the Recovery Wizard. It automatically prompts you to select the basic search parameters: the drive to scan, the format of the lost files, and other settings.

Scanning in fast and full (recommended) modes will take you time, be prepared for that.

Preview is a free feature that will inform you about the integrity of the recovered files, this option will give you more confidence in the correctness of your actions.

Save the recovered files using a license that can be purchased on the company's website directly on the Internet; after that, access to technical support is activated within a year from the date of purchase of the license.
