Are you ready? Let's read!

About this error

Access denied error in Windows 10/11 occurs when working with file or folder permissions. Typically, Windows OS allows you to share a folder or file with multiple users over the local network, and when you change the access permissions to some folders, this error "Failed to enumerate objects" may appear.

Most often, this problem appears due to a conflict of access rights to a folder or due to incorrect configuration of some folder parameters.

Undoubtedly, the error “failed to enumerate objects in the container access is denied” can be solved, and below is shown how to do it.

Let's fix it

1. Command Prompt

So, using the elevated command prompt will save you the hassle of accessing files and folders.

Right-click on Start and then right-click on the command line icon, run the tool as administrator.

Now type correctly in the command prompt window:

uncheck/FX:\FULL_PATH_TO_FOLDER and run the command;

takeown/FX:\FULL_PATH_TO_FOLDER/r/dy and execute the command;

icacls X:\FULL_PATH_TO_FOLDER/give admins:F and run the command;

icacls X:\FULL_PATH_TO_FOLDER/give admins:F/t and run the command;

* Where “FULL_PATH_TO_FOLDER” is the path to your folder. To find out the full path to a folder, simply left-click the folder once and copy the full path from the address bar.

2. Change folder preferences

Microsoft suggests changing the owner of a folder if the previous method did not fix the error "Failed to list objects in container".

So,right-click the folder with the error and select Properties from the context menu.

Next, go to the "Security" tab, click "Advanced" and you will be taken to a new window "Advanced Security Settings". In the upper section of Owner, click the "Change" button, then you will need to enter the username of your Windows account and click the "Check Names" button to find the correct display name for the user. Click OK and return to the Advanced screen. There are now two new options:

  • Replace owner on subcontainers and objects
  • Replace all child object permission records with permission entries from this object.

Activate both of these options, click OK and go to the Security tab again. Click on Advanced, select the button "Add", then on the button "Select" and write "All". Next, click Check Names and click OKto exit the screen.

After that, you should exit all dialog boxes and try to again set the folder permissions. If you do this, you will most likely get rid of the problem.

3. Edit admin list

You could also open the Hardening tab, select Administrators in the list, and click the Edit button. After that click on "Administrators" and check all Deny permissions. Save your changes: Click Apply and OK and see if it works or not.

4. Disable the notification option

If none of the above helps to fix the error "Failed to enumerate objects in container", you can disable the notification option. This will allow you to make changes to folder permissions without displaying pop-ups or any kind of notification. To seamlessly change folder permissions, follow these steps:

In the Start search bar, type UAC and search for the Change User Account Control settings option.

In the new window, deactivate the function "Never notify" and click OK. Now restart your computer and try setting folder permissions; most likely the error “failed to enumerate objects in container” will no longer appear.
