Server Message Block Protocol and Data Safety

Here you will find out:

  • about SMB
  • how DiskInternals Partition Recovery can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

About SMB

SMB (Server Message Block) in computer networks is a client-server communication protocol that is used to share various resources on the network (files, printers, serial ports).

In addition, it can also carry transaction protocols for interprocess communication.

SMB is more commonly used on computers running Windows, which was called the "Microsoft Windows Network" before the advent of Active Directory.

Its Features

SMB is dependent on lower layer transport protocols and supports flexible file locking to improve performance.

Microsoft's SMB protocol has been used with NetBIOS over TCP / IP over UDP. This uses port numbers 137 and 138, TCP 137 and 139. Besides Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT and Windows Me / 98/95 support NBT used by NetBIOS.

Starting with Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 does not support NetBIOS.

In addition, SMB can be used without a separate transport protocol directly over TCP port 445 and NetBIOS has also been supported over various legacy protocols (e.g., IPX / SPX).
