Here are all SSD types and everything you need to know about them

In this article you will find out:

  • about SSD types
  • how to protect your data

Are you ready? Let's read!

An SSD is a solid-state storage device used for data storage, which is usually more resistant to mechanical damage than an electromechanical drive. In addition, solid-state drives are extremely quiet, while write and read operations are performed at high speeds. SSDs can use both traditional hard drive interfaces and form factors - this allows this type of SSD to be used as a replacement for hard drives in any device.

An SSD has several components:

  • control block,
  • storage unit (NAND chip or DRAM chip),
  • additional block of cache memory,
  • interface.

There are several types of data storage devices, you can get to know each of them more closely by studying this article.

SATA SSD

SATA SSD is the most common and versatile type, you can rest assured that it can be used with any computer you have now, even if that computer is many years old.

You may come across “SATA II” / “SATA 3 GB/s” or “SATA III” / “SATA 6 GB/s” - this indicates the maximum possible data transfer rate of the disk.

In general, the most common version is SATA 3.0 with a theoretical transfer rate of 6 GB/s. In practice, this is not the case due to the occurrence of some delays during the encoding of the transmitted data. In total, the actual transfer rate is only 4.8 GBPS (600 MB/s).

PCIe SSD

PCIe SSD (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is a solid-state drive connected to a computer using a PCIe interface. This provides a completely new way to increase the transfer rate of Solid-State Drives (SSDs) to servers and various storage devices. PCIe has a common motherboard interface for hard drive, computer graphics cards, SSD, Wi-Fi, and hardware Ethernet connectivity.

M.2 SSD

M.2 SSD (formerly called NGFF) is also a type of SSD, which are small printed circuit boards containing flash memory and controller chips.

The M.2 SSD is small in size and is similar in shape to RAM. This drive has become the standard configuration for ultra-thin laptops, with many high-end motherboards even featuring two or more M.2 slots. This gives you the ability to use an M.2 SSD in RAID mode.

M.2 SSD size is different: 80 mm, 60 mm or 42 mm long, 22 mm wide, also has NAND chips on one or both sides.

NVMe SSD

NVMe SSD is an NVMe solid-state drive that has an open LUN interface specification for accessing nonvolatile media connected via the PCI Express bus.

NVM Express allows the host to take full advantage of concurrency, reduces I/O overhead and provides various performance improvements, etc.

Protect your data

If it happens that your SSD has lost data and you haven't made a backup, this is not a reason to panic. To fully recover damaged or deleted files, you need a reliable program - DiskInternals Partition Recovery. This software supports recovery of various kinds of images, mail, photos, videos, pictures, music, documents, etc., and there is no limit on the size of the lost files.

Moreover, for those new to data recovery, there is a built-in wizard that guides you step by step until all your data is finally recovered. You can also use a free trial of DiskInternals Partition Recovery, and only after you are sure of the quality and authenticity of the recovery, you can purchase a license and export data to any data source.

Another unique and very useful feature of this application is disk imaging, and it is also free. You can create a disk image in advance and save it to another medium, and in the event of a system failure or data loss, you can refer to this disk image and restore the system configuration.

DiskInternals Partition Recovery is a program with many years of experience (created in 2004) that reliably helps both ordinary users and professionals to recover all data, regardless of the reason for its loss. So, you can be sure that this great app will help you right now, no matter how difficult the situation may be! Download as soon as possible and use DiskInternals Partition Recovery and enjoy your precious data!
