  • 3 most common reasons, why your computer won't read the SD card
  • 3 good solutions about how to solve these problems
  • how Partition Recovery can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

Case 1. Card reader or SD card is dusty/dirty

Card reader or SD card is dusty

If this is this case, the computer won't read the SD card. So check if your card reader or SD card is clean.

If not, clean the adapter (also known as a card reader) and the SD card using a cotton or wool cloth that is slightly moistened with alcohol or water. Do not scratch it! When they are dry, try to reconnect them and check if the SD card is detected. You can also change the adapter or try inserting the SD card into another computer. If, after that, your computer will not read your SD card, try the following methods.

Case 2. Fix the drivers

You have a new memory card in your phone, but when you insert it into the computer, nothing happens. Sound familiar? Why won't your computer is not reading my SD card?

Outdated drivers may be a good reason why your computer won't read the SD card.

In this case, the SD card may not be detected on the computer, or it may be detected, but it will not open. In any case, the problem is obsolete or missing drivers. To fix this, follow these steps:

Press Win+R and type "Control Panel", then select the "Device Manager".

If computer wont read your SD card - try to update drivers.

Now find your SD card and right-click on it. Select "Properties", then, in the "Driver" tab, select and click "Update Driver", then choose "Automatically search for updated driver software". After a while, drivers will be searched and updated. After that, restart the computer and check the operation of the SD card. If the computer still won't detect your SD card, proceed to the next step.

Case 3. Computer won't read SD card because of incorrect formatting
