What is Xserve RAID?

Although officially discontinued, Xserve RAID is still being used by many people, thanks to its advanced features and high-speed performance. The Xserve RIAD is an attachment mass-storage server offered by Apple Inc. It could hold up to 14 different hard disks, and each drive is hot-swappable unless you configured the system as RAID 0. Xserve RAID supports hardware RAID 0+1, 1, 3, and 5, and nested software RAID levels such as RAID 10 and 50.

Xserve RAID High-Performance Storage System

The Xserve RAID system is a high-performance storage system of 14 hot-swappable hard drives. It is a RAID system that supports multiple RAID configurations and is suitable for different storage tasks. This system contains 14 hard drives, which are split into 2 groups of 7 drives each; the two disk groups are managed separately by an identical RAID controller.

Apple marketed Xserve RAID as a companion to Xserve (the company’s Mac network server). However, the storage array was also certified for use third-party use with other vendors' servers like the Windows Server 2003 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Hence, you don’t necessarily need a MacBook to administer the Xserve RAID.

How Scalable is the Xserve RAID?

The storage array features two Fiber Channel ports for high-speed data transfer and an Ethernet port. It comes with its own controllers, as well as includes redundant cooling units/power supplies. Well, the Xserve RAID was limited, it could only offer a maximum of 10.5TB storage space, which may not be enough for some enterprise users; hence, this is best for personal home server users.

But then, the support for common RAID levels is a good thing – talking of the RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10. You can use the Xserve RAID to set up any of these RAID levels and enjoy their unique benefits and features.

RAID Levels Supported By Xserve RAID

  • RAID 0: This RAID level is very fast, but lacks fault tolerance and redundancy. It uses a data striping mechanism to distribute unique (striped) data bits across member drives.
  • RAID 1: This RAID level is relatively slow and gives you low storage, but it offers high fault tolerance. RAID 1 uses a data mirroring technique to mirror block data across all drives in the array.
  • RAID 3: This RAID level supports byte striping with a dedicated parity drive. It is one of the fastest RAID levels but uncommonly used because it’s slow in small data environments.
  • RAID 5: This RAID level supports block data striping with dedicated parity and can survive a single drive failure – to automatically rebuild when the failed drive is replaced.
  • RAID 10: As a nested RAID, this RAID set combines the features and benefits of RAID 0 and RAID 1. It is decently fast and can survive multiple drive failures.
  • RAID 50: Deployed in an environment where high reliability is needed, RAID 50 is a nested RAID level that offers distributed parity of RAID 5 along with the bit striping of RAID 0.

Xserve Configuration

The Xserve RAID can be configured as different RAID arrays, basically, the RAID arrays supported by the system, which are listed above. Notwithstanding, the system can be further configured to meet the user’s personal needs. Some home users practice DIY Xserve configurations to achieve different purposes, mostly high-speed home servers.

Setting Up Xserve RAID

Setting up the Xserve RAID requires high technical knowledge of data interfaces and server setups. The RAID system comes uncoupled, you have to take out the parts, and then install them following the instructions in the included user guide. The installation takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour, or you can call an IT professional to assist with that. Once installed, the Xserve RAID will be connected to your server for data storage.

Initial Configuration

Setting up Xserve RAID begins with the initial configuration process, which involves connecting the hardware, installing the necessary software, and configuring the RAID arrays. This includes selecting the appropriate RAID level, initializing the drives, and setting up logical volumes to match your storage requirements. Proper initial configuration ensures optimal performance and reliability from the start.

Monitoring and Maintenance

Ongoing monitoring and maintenance are crucial to keep Xserve RAID running smoothly. This involves regularly checking the status of the drives, updating firmware and software, and performing routine backups. Effective monitoring tools can alert you to potential issues before they become critical, while regular maintenance ensures the system remains secure and efficient over time.
