What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and How Does It Work

Here you will find out:

  • what is virtual desktop infrastructure
  • how virtual desktop infrastructure is working
  • when DiskInternals can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

What is a virtual desktop infrastructure?

Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) allows you to host a desktop operating system on a centralized server in a data center. VDI provides desktop virtualization since desktop images are usually run on a VM and then delivered to clients (PCs, tablets, etc.) over the network.

VDI is sometimes called server-based computing as it is a variation of the client-server computing model.

How VDI works

How VDI works

Creating a VDI is possible on the basis of a workstation or server operating system.

Only one user can use one virtual desktop. And there may also be an option when multiple virtual desktops are shared on the same OS.

The server operating system is the platform for VDI. At the same time, a desktop is included and is necessary in order to simulate the operating system of the workstation with maximum accuracy. So it makes it possible to use many applications that are not included in the standard server OS (Sound Recorder, Windows Media Player, Character Map, etc.).

Any end device (computer, tablet, etc.) must be provided with special software. Another option is to have an HTML5-based session running on the end device. Any platform is based on a display protocol that transfers session data between a client and a computing resource, while the specific capabilities and functionality of each protocol are different.

Are VDI and desktop virtualization the same thing?

These two concepts are not exactly the same thing. VDI is an alternative to other virtual desktop delivery options. However, only some types of desktop virtualization use host-based virtual machines.

VDI advantages

The advantages of VDI are many, which is why it has become very popular:

  • Now you can get static preparation "in the cloud". Users can access their work from anywhere in the world on-demand and fully perform their duties. This aspect is vital in the modern world.
  • Centralized integrated management of several endpoints (computer, tablet, etc.) with the provision of all necessary configurations and data.
  • You can create a new workplace in minutes, using cheap endpoints with low productivity, as well as change the configurations if necessary. All this leads to significant cost savings for the company, as well as the possibility of remote work for employees.
  • Data security is paramount here. Information is isolated and located on professional server platforms.

What else do you need to keep your VM safe?

In order to keep VMs secure, you only need DiskInternals VMFS Recovery.

This tool is the best at VDI recovery and reading and restoring VMDK files. It has earned the trust of IT professionals and forensic experts for 15 years of excellent performance. In addition, the application provides a free preview of found files, only after which do you need to purchase a license. To learn more about the work and the specifics of the application, download it from the company's website and install it on your computer.

Then follow these instructions:

  1. 1. If necessary, connect through an SSH connection.
  1. 2. Open the drive (via SSH or local drive).
  1. 3. After scanning, select the required VMDK files and mount the VMDK file immediately.
  1. 4. Open it and preview the files (for free). Once you are convinced of the effectiveness of the application, proceed to the last step.
  1. 5. Buy a license and obtain a license key. Complete the data export and enjoy the results of your work!
